A brief history of Pinacoteca di Brera

In 1776 the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria commissioned the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, which started acquiring an impressive collection of art. This, along with some of the Hapsburg collection became the foundation for the museum. It wasn’t until 1809 that the museum was opened to the public by Leopold Bonaparte and became one of the most prominent art museums in Europe. Unfortunately, the museum was damaged during WWII, but thankfully it was lovingly restored to its former glory and many of the paintings were returned after being evacuated for safe keeping.

Today, the Brera art gallery is one of the most important art museums in Italy and home to a great collection of masterpieces, many of which have religious themes as well as historical elements.  With the many rooms to explore filled with exquisite pieces of art from well knowns pieces to hidden gems, here are just a few noteworthy paintings:

The Kiss by Francesco Hayez

A wonderful example of Italian Romanticism that depicts the appreciation of the alliance between France and Italy that eventually led to the unification of Italy after years of upheaval.

Finding of the Body of Saint Mark by Tintoretto

This imposing painting is part of a collection dedicated to the patron saint of Venice, St. Mark, dating between 1562 and 1566. The painting depicts not only the saint’s life but the miracles that he is thought to have performed.

Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio

Painted in the 17th century by the master of Baroque, this is the second version of this painting that depicts the moment Jesus reveals himself to his disciples following his resurrection.

Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Andrea Mantegna

A haunting painting that depicts the body of Jesus with mourners by his side.  This painting is said to offer a humanizing depiction of Jesus, as he lies motionless and pale.

The Marriage of the Virgin by Raphael

A wonderful painting that depicts the marriage of Mary and Joseph painted in the 16th century. An unusual painting due to its subject matter and a great early example of depth in high Renaissance art.

How to visit Pinacoteca di Brera

 Pinacoteca di Brera museum is located near the picturesque Parco Sempione and open to the public every day except Mondays. The entrance tickets allow visitors to spend an hour and a half inside the museum which can be explored independently or accompanied by an audio guide that will provide a deeper insight into the history surrounding the paintings and their artists.
